I started a blog around the mushroom harvesting niche. I chose the topic only because I found an untapped niche and thought it would make it easy to rank my website (and get free traffic). 6 months in and I was completely exhausted by the topic. I had exhausted my interest and written about all I could on the topic. Each article I write had to be thoroughly researched since I knew nothing of this topic!
After a few months my website did rank for its main keyword “when to harvest garlic”. However, it was difficult to monetise due to a lack of affiliate products in this niche. I monetised with Adsense however and make a little from advertising clicks. The site was a failure though, and after a few months of it ranking, I gave up on it. The site slid down the rankings and was soon replaced by a much keener mushroom fanatic!
It was a lesson learned for me. I realised that the topic had to be one I had an affinity with going forwards. Blogging is a very long term and slow strategy to get traffic. It can take years before your blog is making a good amount of income for you. So choosing a topic you have zero interest in is something I would definitely advise against.
When you love you topic, you can enjoy the process. If you hate the process it’s much more difficult to put in the work required to make a blog profitable.
Find Something You Love Which Can Be Well Monetised

However, these are usually very difficult niches to compete in as a blogger; so it can take much longer to get your blog going. Ideally find a niche you love, which is evergreen and in which you can niche down into a sub-niche. For example with the money making online niche, you can create a sub niche such as affiliate marketing for seniors, for example. With a dating niche, you can create a sub-nice as dating for travellers, or dating for retirees.
This means your niche can still be well monetised but also that there will be less competition. Top niches like Forex marketing, money making online and dating sites are incredibly difficult to rank your content for, especially when starting out. A good strategy is to use Google’s keyword planner to find long tail keyword within your niche. Then create content for those keywords in your blog posts.
